IS VERO THE NEW INSTAGRAM?

Over the last few days everyone seems to be jumping on a new social media band wagon – a brand new app, Vero. Dubbed ‘the new Instagram’ the app lets users share photos, add links, and recommend books, movies and TV shows to friends. In the past week alone it has jumped from 99 to number one in Apple’s UK store, and with leading social platforms awash with criticism this suggests users may be looking for alternatives, but does Vero have what it takes? So far users have been reporting problems with the app and questioning if the claims are too good to be true.

Vero actually initially launched in 2015, by billionaire businessman Ayman Hariri who said he started the app because he was frustrated with how many adverts appear on sites like Twitter and Facebook, and in recent months people have been complaining about adverts on Instagram, which have been introduced to the platform gradually since 2013. This coupled with changes to the app’s algorithm, which now highlights posts that have more likes, comments and shares, instead of showing them in chronological order could well be contributing factors to Vero’s sudden popularity, as it sorts posts in reverse chronological order. Having said this it does seem that a lot of people are confused by exactly how to use Vero, particularly with user reporting problems having downloaded it, certainly having downloaded it ourselves several error messages show up as you navigate pages.

On their website Vero state that ‘Most social networks reduce everyone to a friend or a follower. This encourages us to only share the parts of our lives we think are most interesting. When you can control who sees what, you can behave in way that is more natural, which we believe ends up being better for you.’ Instead of just picture and video content the app allows you to share Movies, TV, music, books, places, photos and links – arguably a much broader sense of yourself, hence billing themselves the social network that ‘let’s you be yourself’.

The subscription model will allow them to keep Vero advertising-free, and to ‘focus solely on delivering the best social experience instead of trying to find new ways to monetize our users’ behavior or tricking them back into the app with notifications.’

Presumably only time will tell whether this app will truly live up to its hype. We think the concept sounds great, and will also be great for brands and businesses! Watch this space and we’ll be reporting back!
